Introduction

Doris Gwaltney is the author of three historical novels. Her debut novel, shakespeare's sister (1995), is about Judith, a fictional sister of Shakespeare whose great passion is to write and act. duncan browdie, gent. (2002) follows the rise of an impoverished Scottish boy in 18th century Virginia from indentured servitude to gentility. Gwaltney's most recent novel, homefront (2006), is the story of two girls who come of age and become friends in the shadow of the biggest war in modern history.

In addition to her novels, Doris Gwaltney has written a collection of fifteen historical monologues for performance or research. a mirror in time: history in first person (2007) introduces us to such famous historical figures as Katherine Parr, William Shakespeare, and Harriet Tubman.

Gwaltney's other works include several nonfiction booklets, most notably, george purdie, merchant of smithfield (1996), on the the life of a Scots storekeeper in Colonial Virginia.

Doris Gwaltney has given numerous lectures and workshops on writing. She has taught workshops in the writing of genealogy and presently teaches writing in a Continuing Education program at Christopher Newport University. She lives in Smithfield, VA, with her husband. They have three children and nine grandchildren.
